"Dance is your pulse, your heartbeat, your breathing. It's the rhythm of your life. It's the expression in time and movement, in happiness, joy, sadness and envy." ~Jaques D'ambroise

Just watched Prix de Lausanne 2012 online…

The first time I watched Prix de Lausanne was when Steven McRae (principal of Royal Ballet) won first place. Ever since, I haven’t stopped watching.

Even though it may not be the biggest international competition (YAGP is) the environment is so intense and the quality of professionalism is amazing. The contestants have worked all so hard to even gain entry to compete at the prix, and yet only a fraction of those people make it to the finals, and then only a fraction of those people attain scholarships or apprenticeships.

The winner of this year’s prix, Madoka Sugai (17) from Mika Sasaki’s ballet studio happens to be from the same city I’m from and have lived in for 7 years (yes, I’m Japanese). I’ve seen her dance at a couple of galas and competitions here and there so when I saw that she had won the prix, I was flabbergasted (in a good way of course). And Hannah Bettes! Wow. To win the prix at 15 is an amazing feat.

Anyways, my whole point here is that ballet is seriously amazing. Cliche, I know, but from the prix it’s evident that ballet can be intense yet so enjoyable, and it has to be made to look easy by the dancer, yet to perfect each and every step is so hard and tiring. And while ballet may not be the most known form of the arts,  it is, in it’s own world, an international language.

Everyone should really go watch this year’s competition when they have time. It’s totally worth it! —> http://www.prixdelausanne.tv/
